description="Successeur de l'Alouette II, l'Ecureil fut conçu comme un appareil à bon marché ne nécessitant pas une maintenance importante et présentant un niveau de vibration et de bruit peu important. Le prototype de cet appareil effectua son vol initial en avril 1974, et les machines suivantes furent dotées d'un Turbomeca Arriel ou d'un Lycoming LTS101 de 615 ch. Ce dernier équipe les versions AS 350C et AS 350D Astar, destinées au marché nord-américain, alors que le premier propulse la variante AS 350B, conçue pour le marché mondial. Un modèle bimoteur, mis au point sous la désignation d'AS 355 (Twinstar en Amérique et Ecureil 2 dabs le reste du monde), a donné naissance à deux sous-versions : l'AS 355E et l'AS 355F, avec un fuselage renforcé, des pales de rotor différentes et un systme de transmission modifié."
